Full-time, mostly remote position (Eastern time zone preferred). Toronto preferred for occasional team events.
Ability to work in Canada required (i.e. existing work permit or Visa).
We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time. Please tell us why you think this is the right role for you.
You're a self-starter who’s been the first engineer at a successful startup before. You have a broad range of experience in building and maintaining applications in production. You believe that shipping is a feature and are pragmatic (lazy?!) in using off-the-shelf components whenever possible to achieve your goal. You're a fast mover who knows the tradeoffs between good-and-soon vs. perfect-and-eventually. You're a strong communicator and team player, ready to coordinate with our cross-functional team to make sure we hit deliverables for our customers.
Join a small team as the first full time engineer working directly with the founders to help shape and execute the product roadmap
Architect and build secure customer-facing and internal applications--review code, write tests, maintain infrastructure, and help define best practices
Help select & direct software contractors to meet goals and deadlines
5+ years shipping and supporting production applications with real-world users as a full stack engineer
Experience managing and maintaining production infrastructure
Experience with JS frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue; HTML & CSS; MySQL or other relational DBs; containers; AWS (EC2, S3) or Google Cloud (we value your ability to solve problems across the stack more than your rote knowledge of technologies)
Experience as first (or early) engineer in a successful startup
Biology / Microbiology background or education; working with genomic data
Machine Learning framework experience
Experience building mobile-friendly web applications
Solid grasp of data visualization methods, libraries, tools (e.g. D3, Tableau)
Feel like you can’t tick all the boxes above? If you have some of the skills and experience that we’re looking for and are willing to use your talent to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply!
